When you go down a path of privacy in the modern world of data collection, you have to ask yourself a question. How far are you willing to with it, or rather how much convenience are you willing to sacrifice? We have become so accustomed to the "on-demand" way of life, we have to ask, can we truly re-train ourselves to dump convenience for privacy? If your answer is yes, how can you truly accomplish this when half of the equation relies on your peers to embrace your journey? Wait what? What do you mean my peers? Let us dive into just how involved something like securing your communication can really be.
Hey I just downloaded this cool app called Signal! Great! However, the end to end encryption, the encrypted data at rests, only works if the person you are communicating with is also using Signal. If you send a message to someone using their native messaging app, your messages are not secure, and the photos or text you sent is living on their phone unprotected. Therefore, you must expect your own peers to also indulge your way of life. Some have even gone to the point in which they will not even communicate with those who refuse to use such services. Let us be real though, most people associate and befriend like-minded individuals. So getting them onboard really is not a tall task, but it is crucial in locking down your communications.
What is Signal? Well they got their big break when Elon Musk donated a whopping million dollars to their cause. Signal is a non-profit organization that boasts top-tier encryption for SMS and phone calls. You can even face time through their app. In fact, I enjoy it so much, it is my default messenger service on my phones and has been for years. The beauty of it, is I have been using it for so long, the other features for other non-secure apps have become unknown to me. I have been able to get immediate family, friends, and even clients onboard. What is my selling point? We have all been in a car or at a bar, or some other social gathering when our phones began launching targeting ads based on the conversations we were just previously having. How messed up is that. Our communication devices are not just for our use, but are being used to spy on us for marketing and product sales. Where does that end? What else are our phones being used for without our knowledge? It is scary to go down the rabbit hole on that one, so do not do it. Let the more paranoid freaks like myself do all the worrying for you. When we return from our own created hell, we will let you know how bad it is. These targeted ads have stopped ever since I disabled all chat apps except for Signal. Crazy right! Your friends who are also bothered by this behavior of data collection will have no problem accepting your invitation and joining the privacy movement.
My goal is to lock my life down as if I were to put my data into a coffin secured into a deep crypt, with booby traps and all. Therefore, this year is the rise of the Coffin King.
